• usual partitions: /, /var, swap, /usr
  • size / at ~256M. /boot, /tmp, /root are the primary space hogs. each kernel uses about 20M in /boot. as little as 64M is ok if /tmp is mdconfig'd and you only need one kernel
  • size /var large enough to hold /var/log, /var/mail, and at least one kernel core dump (which consists of all RAM) in /var/crash
  • size swap partition(s) at at least 2 x current RAM. kernel core dumps are first written to a swap partition, generally (note: can only use a single dumpdev; two interleaved 256M swap partitions won't hold a 512M coredump)
  • /usr gets the rest of it
• install all distributions
• while installing, shell in vty4 (alt-f4) will become more and more usable... be careful not to ^D or exit, as the shell will not return
• set root password
• set time zone
• reboot.
